Li Kung-Lin (d1106): Foreign and Strange Lands N-Sung Painter
-----------------------------------------------

Li Gonglin (李公麟, 1049–1106), was a Chinese antiquarian, painter, and politician during the Northern Song Dynasty. Born into a scholarly home near what is modern day Lu'an City, Li Gonglin passed the highest level of civil service examinations at 21 and became a civil officer. He became famous for his paintings of horses, then he turned to Buddhism and Taoism religious painting, as well as portrait and landscape painting. To him we own the oldest mention of K'un-lun Ts'eng-k'i (Madagascar) in Chinese sources.

Also called Li Lung Mien

Taken from: Probstein Catalog 1913 p19-20

A set of five drawings in monochrome representing scenes from: " Foreign and strange lands." Opposite each picture an explanation.

1 The San-foh-ts (Sumatra)

2 Suan-lo (Siam)

3 The Hwei-Huh (Ouigour Turks)

4 The K'un-lun Ts'eng-k'i (Madagascar)

5 Fu-Sang state (Japan)
The medieval drawing of Madagascar was put for sale in London in 1913 for 50 British pounds. The text accompanying is given under
. I do not know where the drawing is today. No picture of the drawing is known.

From the description in the catalog it seems it is not a drawing of tribute bearers (as the other prints of Li Kung Lin are) but a drawing of the country itself.

In a scroll attributed to Li Gonglin and held by the Princeton University of Art Museum, tribute bearers from the following countries are depicted: Boni 浡泥 (western Borneo), Sanfoqi 三佛齊 (south-eastern Sumatra), Fusang 扶桑 (Japan), Kunlun Cengqi 崐崙層期 (Madagascar), Nuwang guo 女王國 (Queen Country= name for Japan when ruled by an Empress), Huilin 回鶻,(Uighurs), Dada 韃靼 (Tatars), and Nusong 女送 (Land of Woman).

In the Northern Song Dynasty Li Gonglin's "Eight Frames of the Authentic Album of Zhi Gong Tu", there is a picture of "Kunlun Sengqi State" , whose inscription is as follows:

"The kingdom of the Kunlun Sengqi is in the southwest, and its territory is connected to the island. There are big birds in the land, and people cut off their feather pipes as tools for eaves (draining the eaves), and there are savages roaming around, each with a sword, yet justice is lightly existing .”
