Ibn Babawayh: Al-Khisal;

(Numeric Classification of Traditions on Characteristics) (d991)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Babawayh al-Qummi commonly referred to as Ibn Babawayh was a Persian Shia Islamic. The exact date of Ibn Babawayh's birth is not known. He was born and raised in Qom in modern-day Iran. Qom was a centre of study of Shia traditions and it was this form of religious learning to which Ibn Babawayh adhered. In 966 CE, Ibn Babawayh left Qom for Baghdad. Ibn Babawayh died in Ray in 991AD. He is buried at Ebn-e Babooyeh in Iran. Al-Khisal is about moral instruction and their scientific, historical and legal origins. His few mentions of East Africa are not very important.

SIX TRIBES ARE NOT MODEST

Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid - may God be pleased with him - narrated that Muhammad ibn al-Hassan al-Saffar quoted Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Saeed ibn Jinah who linked it up through a chain of narrators to Aba Abdullah as-Sadiq (5), Six tribes are not modest: the Sandi, (1) the Zanji, the Turkish, the Kurdish, the Khuzestani (2) and those who reside in the hills of Ray. The sweetness of belief will never enter the heart of the Sindhi (a person from Sindh; modern-day Pakistan), the Zunji, the Khuzestani (2), the Kurdish, the Berbers, those who reside in the hills of Ray (present day Tehran in Iran), and those born of adultery.

It has been narrated from Imam Sadiq (5) (peace be upon him) that he said: The world consists of seven regions: Gog and Magog (6), Rome, China, Zanj, the people of Moses and the regions of Babylon. (7)

Perhaps the meaning is to express the climates of the world from the point of view of their inhabitants and to express the difference in their appearance, color and character. If it is meant to limit mankind to them, the region of Babylon includes Arabs and foreigners, the region of China includes all Turks, and the region of Zanj includes Indians, and perhaps the meaning is to express the strange classes of people, and this is clearer …….

The Prophet of God used to read that his helper is "Kubkri", and he is someone who, whenever he sets his mind to something, insists until he achieves it, and among the Romans, "Batrisa" is the kidnapper of lives. And among the Persians, "Jabtar" is a hunter. They say that he is skilled in hunting, and among the Turks, "Batir" is a leopard that tears it whenever he puts his claws into something, and among the Zangians, they say "Jabtar" who cuts the joints between bones, and Among the Abyssinians, "Bathrik" is the one who destroys everything that attacks him, and he said: I am "Hydrah" near my mother, that is, the one who has a sober opinion.

(7) This kind of division into seven regions is based on the old Indian geography. See also Yakut (1220).

(8) Many authors have written on the names of Imam Ali; I only mention some as there are many repetitions: Al-Khasibi (957); Talha ibn 'Ubaydullah al-'Awni (961); Ibn Babawayh (991); Baha al-Din al-Muqtana (11th cent).
