Nizam al-Din al-Nisapuri: Tawdih al-Tadhkira (Commentary on Astronomy) (1311)

In some manuscripts of this cosmological-cosmographical work a world map based on Biruni’s map is found.

In this world map Africa is split in two. In the western half is the Maghreb the Eastern has the Mouintains of the

Moon and Habash. This is the case for the following manuscript: Najaf, Ayatallah al-Hakim Library, MS 649/1,

fol. 78a. Similar maps are found in: Qattan Marwazi : Kayhan-shinakht (Cosmos knowledge) (around 1000) and

Abu'l Majd Muhammad b. Mas'ud Tabrizi: Safina-yi Tabriz; (Treasury of Tabriz) (1321 to 1323). However I did not

find this map yet. The maps given under are different.

A map of the world from Nazam al-Din al-Hussein bin Muhammad al-Nishapuri's Sharh al-Tadhkarah, an astronomical
commentary originating from Anatolia or Iran. This copy is from the early fifteenth century. It is centered on the Persian
Gulf, with the Horn of Africa in the middle of the lower half.   Al Nil is the straight red line between the lake southeast of
the Horn and Egypt. The bodies of land with their southern points descending into the Indian Ocean are from right to left:
Bilad al Hind (India), The Island of the Arabs (Arabian Peninsula), and mysteriously Bilad al Barbar wal Habasha (The land
of the Barbarians and Abysinnia).  According to some authors it is the Sinia Peninsula. (map is added under)

Please also see a special world map of the Tadkira of al Tusi under the year 1331. Both maps are found in Beirut.

And under a map from a different copy of this book: 822-828AH Add Ms 23397 Tawḍīḥ al-Tadhkirah al-Nāṣirīyah توضيح التذكرة الناصرية
