Amin Nazlabadi: Jalal wa Jamal (Honour and Beauty) (1415)

The story of (prince) Jalal and (princes) Jamal is a Sufi-inspired mystical love poem in Persian composed in Herat in the year 818 A.H. (1415-16) by Amin ul-din Muhammad Nazlabadi Bayhaqi Sabzavari (d1451). At the beginning of the 16th century, this transcript was added, made by the famous calligraph Sultan Ali Qa'ini. The manuscript is provided with 34 lavish, colorful and detailed miniatures, each of which is a unique work of art.

In this work two miniatures on opposing pages showing on the left the Persian forces on horses in a surprise attack on African (or Indian??) forces mounted on elephants in the right painting. From this unique manuscript no translation or edited text exists yet.
